Is It Bad Being Alone
Absolutely not. Susan Cain, author of “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a
World That Can't Stop Talking” says that it's very normal for introverts to
spend a lot of time alone almost every day. It is, in her words, "the oxygen that they need to breathe everyday".
An important distinction to be made here is between shy and introvert people. There are two kinds of people who may stand alone at a party: a shy guy and an introvert guy. The shy guy feels hesitant in speaking to people when he wants to, while an introvert isn't inclined to speak to people even though he has no hesitation in doing so.
Being alone helps you understand yourself, because there’s nothing much to worry about. It teaches you to listen to yourself, because there’s not much noise. It makes you strong, because there’s no one to sympathize your weakness. It makes you cautious, because there’s no one to correct your mistakes, and it makes you mature, because there’s no one to laugh at your childishness.
If you FEEL like you are isolating yourself from others, because you don't really know how to connect - that is different than enjoying being alone. Considering the level of stress in our society; stress and depression are inseparable. There are also levels of depression that people may just want to live in the dark, question other peoples motives, and develop feelings of fear, resentment, guilt, or gloom. But it’s totally upto how you, as an individual perceives the thought of being alone, Are you using it to develop yourself? Away from distractions or figuring out what you really want from life? The mind works best when you’re alone.
YOU are the best company for yourself if you just know the right things to do. But, if thats making you feel lonely, then it can be a concern, it's just not good for your mental health. At times the loneliness leads to irritation and comes out as an offset of boredom during holidays.
Loneliness can be a advantage, as well a disadvantage. When loneliness is required
by default, it is sought after one, and when company is needed badly at the moment loneliness is preferred as a disadvantage. It still should not be interpreted as a negative concept, because, on the contrary, it is one of the required stages and phases occurring some or other time in our day-to- day lives.
